Overview

The Type 96 (ZTZ-96) is the workhorse of China's tank fleet β€” less capable than the premium Type 99A, but far more numerous, and the vehicle that actually fills the majority of the PLA's armoured units. With an estimated 2,500 or more in service, it is the most common main battle tank in Chinese service and the practical face of PLA armour. A roughly 42–43 tonne tank, the Type 96 mounts a 125 mm smoothbore gun with an autoloader, composite and explosive-reactive armour, and a modern fire-control system, especially in the upgraded 96A and 96B variants. The 96B, with an improved engine and fire control, became internationally familiar as China's entry in Russia's "Tank Biathlon" competition. It is lighter and cheaper than the Type 99A, trading some protection and power for affordability and broad fielding. For an analyst, the Type 96 is a reminder that mass matters. While the Type 99A grabs attention as China's best tank, it is the Type 96 that provides the numbers for a continental fight β€” on the Indian border, in the northern plains, or in any large-scale ground campaign. Its blend of adequate capability and producible cost is exactly what a large army needs to equip its bulk, and it underpins the PLA's ability to mass armour at scale.
