KJ-500 airborne early warning aircraft
Overview
The KJ-500 (Kongjing-500) is China's modern airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft β the flying radar and command node that ties together the PLA's reconnaissance-strike complex. Based on the Y-9 transport airframe, it carries a fixed, three-sided active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar inside a circular dorsal dome, giving 360-degree coverage without the rotating radome of older designs. Its importance is out of all proportion to its modest profile. An AEW&C aircraft detects and tracks aircraft and missiles far beyond the horizon of ground or ship radars, and directs friendly fighters and weapons onto targets. The KJ-500 is the airborne brain that cues J-20 stealth fighters to fire their long-range PL-15 missiles, hands targeting data to anti-ship missiles, and extends the PLA's situational awareness deep over the Western Pacific. This makes it a high-value "enabler" β and precisely the kind of target that very-long-range missiles like the PL-17 are designed to kill. For an analyst, the KJ-500 is a reminder that modern airpower is a system, not a collection of fighters. China has built a substantial fleet across the PLA Air Force and Navy, and a carrier-capable AEW aircraft (the KJ-600) is following for the Fujian. Degrading these enablers is a central objective for the United States and its allies, just as protecting them is for China.

Timeline
Specifications
Doctrine & Employment
Role
Airborne early-warning and control aircraft β the radar and command node of the PLA kill chain.
Design Philosophy
Fixed-AESA 360-degree coverage on a reliable transport airframe.
Employment
Stand-off orbits detect and track targets and direct fighters and missiles onto them.
Threat Context
Cues J-20 and anti-ship missile shots; a top enabler target for both sides.
How to Compare
Read against the E-7 Wedgetail and E-2 Hawkeye, and as the J-20's teammate.
Operational Patterns
Typical Deployment
Stand-off orbits providing radar coverage and command of fighters/weapons over contested seas.
Typical Task Group
Cues J-20/J-16 fighters and anti-ship missiles; behind IADS protection.
Readiness
Substantial fleet across PLAAF and PLAN.

Peer Comparison Matrix
The E-7 is the modern Western AEW&C standard; the KJ-500 is China's fixed-AESA equivalent.

The KJ-500 cues the J-20's long-range missile shots β the two operate as a team.

Combat History
Routinely operated on patrols over the East and South China Seas and around Taiwan, often coordinating fighter incursions.
Demonstrates its role as the airborne C2 node of PLA operations.
Known Vulnerabilities
High-value target
Large, non-stealthy, vital enabler β a priority target for long-range AAMs.
Context: Weapons like the PL-17 and AIM-174 are built to kill such aircraft.
Mitigation: Operated behind fighter screens and IADS.
Limited numbers per orbit
Few aircraft can sustain continuous coverage of a large area.
Context: Attrition or maintenance gaps create blind spots.
Mitigation: Fleet expansion.
Variants
| Variant | Designation | Years | Count | Status | Key Changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| KJ-500 | β | 2015β | β | active | Y-9-based AEW&C with fixed AESA |
| KJ-500A | β | 2019β | β | active | Aerial-refuelling probe for extended endurance |
Modernization Programmes
KJ-600 carrier AEW
Carrier-capable AEW aircraft for the Fujian, analogous to the U.S. E-2 Hawkeye.
Impact: Extends AEW coverage to PLAN carrier groups.
